Benjamin Graham was a financial analyst and professor widely known as “the father of value investing”. He wrote two books, Security Analysis and The Intelligent Investor, which might as well be religious texts for people who follow the discipline. His style of investing strongly emphasizes independent thinking, the detachment of emotion, and the importance of separating price from value.
After graduating from Columbia and a stint at Wall Street, Graham went on to found his own mutual fund. Managing the Graham-Newman Corporation, Graham averaged a return of about 20% annualized from 1936 to 1956. His philosophies involve famous concepts like the Margin of Safety and Mr. Market.
Throughout his life, his love of value investing turned into a professorship at Columbia. At Columbia, he mentored Warren Buffet, who described Graham as the second most influential person in his life after his father. Well-known investors like Gabelli, Klarman, and Howard Marks still follow Graham's principles to this day.
